Harry Clay: A Shining Star
When I met Harry Clay last week on The Strand, I thought I was either talking to talk show icon Howard Stern or Steven Tyler of Aerosmith. He’s got that rock star vibe coupled with some sho’ nuff down home Texas hospitality. He was kind enough to share his thoughts with Humans of Galveston. Here’s what he had to say:
Humans of Galveston: Tell us a little about yourself, Harry.
Harry: I was born on Jan. 30, 1960 – I’m 62 – and have lived in Dallas for 35 years
Humans of Galveston: What brings you to the island tonight?
Harry: We’ve been visiting friends for the last three or four days on the island. We rediscovered Galveston about 10 years ago. The island is vibrant, it’s fun and we come back every chance that we get.
Humans of Galveston: Would you happen to be a musician?
Harry: Yes, I’ve played bass in three tribute bands – Motley Mayhem (Mötley Crüe), GNR 87 (Guns ‘N Roses) and also The Wild Boys(Duran Duran)
Humans of Galveston: So music is your heart and soul, but do you have another job?
Harry: I was an aircraft engineer 35 years for Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin.
Humans of Galveston: Wait a minute. How could you leave such a lucrative aviation job?
Harry: I didn’t leave it. I still do that. I was playing bass in the ‘70s so I’ve been playing for 22 years. So I have a day job and a night job doing the tributes.
Humans of Galveston: When you walk off the stage after a show, how fired up is the crowd. Do they to come up and hug you and take a picture? Is almost a paparazzi scenario?
Harry: I love people so it’s cool that we can meet people and really have a ton of fun with them, and it’s a really great thing.
Humans of Galveston: I’d like to get inside your head for a moment here. What would you like the world to know?
Harry: What I would like the world to know kind of relates to the life I’ve had. When I was 15 years old I started playing bass guitar. I never knew it would last 40 years. I found that lovin’ it, it stays alive. When you find that piece of your life – it can be music or whatever it is – you hang onto it. It will keep you young and keep you living a great life. I see it in myself. The people that have had that, I really admire them and I can’t imagine not having that.
