Courtney : 'I'm Only Human'
Updated: Mar 6, 2022
Humans of Galveston: Tell us about your life, Courtney.
Courtney: I’m 32 and I was born and raised on the island. I grew up in Cedar Terrace, and later we moved to Palm Terrace. I had a normal childhood, running around with the kids and having fun
Humans of Galveston: What incident stands out in your mind from your younger years?
Courtney: My momma was staying in Texas City and I went to visit her one day. I was knocking on the door to see her and I could hear through the door that her boyfriend was screaming at her, yelling at her. So, I’m knocking, knocking, knocking and he come answering the door aggressive. You not knowing, at the same time this is my momma. Like, I will blank out,
I will forget how old you is, I will forget that you’re a human being, I’ll forget that I’m a human being, and I will go overboard. The dude, like, poked my momma in her forehead right in front of me. And with that being said, I blacked out. After I woke up from the blackout, he was on the ground, knocked out. I was so mad. My mom was staying with him and he ended up putting her out after a few months. She’s staying with my brother. My brother was mad at me at first, but he thought about it and said, ‘I would have done the same thing.’ And all this went on at a time when I was trying fix myself and get myself together. But the devil attacked, you know, and I went the wrong way about it. But I’m only human. You don’t play with nobody momma. I’m not young no more and I don’t do stuff like that now.
Humans of Galveston: If you could go back in time and talk to a younger you, what would you tell him?
Courtney: To stay in school and try to stay away from certain crowds. You can get influenced by what they’re doing. They can be sipping some purple syrup (Codeine) and you’ve never done a drug in your life. Hang with your friends that you play basketball with every day. I would tell him to stay focused. I would tell him that you’re a great basketball player. Stay focused. Please, I’m begging you. I’ma come support you and be at all your games. Financially, I got you on some shoes that will give you enough confidence to ball in. I don’t want you in some busted up shoes.
Humans of Galveston: What are two things from your heart that you’d like to share with to the world?
Courtney: I want to share God’s word, and not only do I want to share it, I want to show it because God can make you glow. God’s word is better than any piece of platinum, any diamond, any gold. And, try not to make mistakes that I made when I was young. Try not to repeat them. And teach that to others.
Humans of Galveston: What final thoughts would like to share?
Courtney: I don’t want to die and not be remembered. I want to be remembered for something positive, and I want to help change lives. We are in this world, but this is not our home. Heaven is home. The things that you do on earth can cause you to get to the pearly gates, even your tongue. You gotta watch your tongue. Don’t speak out of anger, ‘cause when you speak out of anger, most likely that tongue gone get forked. Even me. I have a temper. I don’t bother nobody. The humble people who get bothered take it the hardest, and I have to ask God to forgive me. I’m only human.
